Ford Plans to Reorganize Plants to Produce More SUVs
Ford Motor Company will increase production of SUVs and other larger vehicles by reworking several plant operations in Michigan and Kentucky. The shift in focus also came to light with the news that Ford plans to not cut its workforce despite the changes.
In Louisville, the factory that has been producing Ford Escapes and Lincoln MKCs plans to reduce the number of shifts but will relocate workers to support higher selling lines, like the Lincoln Navigator. Sales for the Navigator are up 80% from last year.
The Michigan factory that produces the Mustang will change to be open for one shift per day. Workers will be transferred to support production lines for the F-150 and Ranger pickups at nearby facilities.
The assembly plant in Chicago will not be affected by these changes, employees at those locations assemble the Ford Explorer and the Police Interceptor SUV.
The United Auto Workers union is working with Ford and those employees who will be transferred to new production facilities to ensure a smooth transition.
