General Motors and Michelin Announce Airless Tire

General Motors (GM) has partnered with Michelin announcing plans to bring an airless tire to North American markets, with probable arrival in 2024.

Known as "Unique Puncture-Proof Tire System" this "tweel" cannot be under or over-inflated, making dangerous blowouts a thing of the past. The new design also cuts down on waste in the disposal.

Testing on the system will begin this year, with the 2020 Chevrolet Bolt in real-life environments. GM and Michelin are testing on a track that will be pot-holed and snow-packed.

Currently, other manufacturer-supplier combinations are at work on the non-pneumatic tire concepts, including Hancock, Sumitomo and Goodyear.
