Rear-End Crashes are Reduced by 46% Due to Braking Technology
General Motors and the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute released findings that show automatic emergency braking features in vehicles with forward collision alerts reduced rear-end crashes by 46%. Lane change alerts also sharply reduced side blind zone incidents by 26%.
The study shows that these new vehicle features have real-world effectiveness to prevent roadway incidents.
Other statistics shared through the study:
- Rear back-up cameras reduced incidents by 21%
- Rear parking assist functionality decreased backing up crashes by 38%
As a second part of the study, headlights were also examined as a safety feature and the study found that IntelliBeam and High-Intensity Discharge headlights reduced nighttime pedestrian/animal incidents by 49%.
This study looked at the performance of 3.7M GM Vehicles across 20 different models from 2013 to 2017. Systems were evaluated from police report crash report databases.
