Ontario May Pull the Plug on Electric Vehicle Subsidies

Ontario’s Progressive Conservative party is planning to dismantle the existing cap-and-trade system, a portion of which provides consumers of eligible electrified vehicles up to $14,000 in provincial rebates.

Doug Ford was sworn in on June 29 and will be implementing a series of cost-cutting measures.

Taxpayer advocates were pleased, however automotive industry advocates like Global Automakers of Canada believe that subsidies for EVs will continue to be necessary until they reach full acceptance by Canadian consumers.

The Progressive Conservative party called the cap-and-trade scheme “a Liberal green scheme” and “costly vanity project.”
